Maria was born on June 29th, 1899. Maria's father was Willem (Oupa Rollie) Higgs and her mother was Elsje (Ouma Ellie) Carolina Liebenberg. Her paternal grandparents were James Jacobus Higgs and Christina Johanna Roux; her maternal grandparents were Albertus Liebenberg and Helena Van Vuuren. She had four brothers and two sisters, named James, Albertus, William, John, Johanna and Elsie.
