Elizabeth was born on November 23rd, 1884 and her baptism took place on January 18th, 1885 in Winburg.  Elizabeth's father was Matthys Daniel Maartens and her mother was Maria Elizabeth Froneman.  Her maternal grandparents were Christoffel Cornelius Froneman and Maria Elizabeth Opperman. She had three brothers and five sisters, named Hendrik, Christoffel, Matthys, Johanna, Louisa, Sara, Adriana and Magdalena.  She was the oldest of the nine children.
