Hester was born in 1899.  Hester's father was Jan Hendrik Maartens and her mother was Johanna Magdalena de Klerk. She had four brothers and ten sisters, named Francois, Francois, Willem, Barend, Magdalena, Christina, Johanna, Susanna, Wilhelmina, Christina, Aletta, Anna, Esther and Anna.  She was the fifth youngest of the fifteen children.  She died due to a medical problem, Measles & diarrhoea, at the age of 2 on September 25th, 1901 in Brandfort RC Concentration Camp.
