Jasper was born about 1746 in Cape of Good Hope and his baptism took place on December 30th, 1746. Jasper's father was Jasper Maartens and his mother was Catharina  van Laar.  His paternal grandparents were Anthony or Anton  Maartens and Sara Moller (Claassen). He had three brothers and four sisters, named Anthonie, Jacobus, Frederik, Anna, Sara, Maria and Aletta.  He was the fourth youngest of the eight children.
