Her paternal grandparents were Joachim Hendrik Maartens and Catharina Anna Francina Groenewald (Elizabeth); her maternal grandfather was Jacob Johannes Viljoen and her maternal grandmother is Petronella Elizabeth Viljoen (Magdalena Victor). She had five brothers and two sisters, named Joachim, Jacob, David, Hercules, Jacobus, Catharina and Johanna. She was the third oldest of the eight children. She died on October 27th, 1918 in "Middeldeel", dist. Bloemfontein.General Notes
