Jacob, known as Japie, was born on January 19th, 1908. Japie's father was Joshua Joachim Martins (Francois) and his mother was Jacoba Johanna van Eden (Aletta). His paternal grandparents were Jan (Oom Thomas) Thomas Martins and Elizabeth (Meraai) Jacoba Margaretha van Wyk; his maternal grandparents were Louis Pieter van Eden and Jacoba Johanna Rademan. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Jan, Louis, Josua, Marthinus, Elizabeth, Jacoba and Fritzie. He was the youngest of the eight children.General Notes
