A1 according to BENC which means that he is patriarch of the Turpin family in SA.
On his marriage certificate he is Phillip Henry Turpin aged 26 which gives his birth date as 1844. He is also descibed as a schoolmaster but could possibly have become a missionary. The difference in names and DOB cannot be explained. Doubtful if that two Turpins could hgave married on the same date to two girls with same names although spelling on marriage certificate is Maartens. Date of birth changed from 1948 (from father's Estate File)
Emily Charlotte Cloete Turpin told the family she was on the wagons given a free pass through one of the battles in 1879 by Cetewayo - she would have been about 3 years old and been with, I presume, her mother Annie Margritta Martens.
At death her address was ; St. Lukes Mission, Engabeni, Alfred division, Natal.

THOMPSON, THOMAS, Lieutenant, was the son of Thomas Thompson, of Hillside, Pakenham, Victoria, Australia. He was educated at a private school in Victoria, Australia, and served a year with the Victorian Rangers, two years with the Victorian Mounted Rifles, and twenty months with Thorneycroft's Mounted Infantry. He served in the South African War of 1899-1902; was mentioned in Despatches; received the King's Medal with two clasps, and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette, 19 April 1901]: "Thomas Thompson, Lieutenant, Thorneycroft's Mounted Infantry. In recognition of services during the operations in South Africa". The Insignia were sent to the Commander-in-Chief in South Africa, and presented by Colonel Ternan at Spitzkop 8 January 1902.
