Philippus was born on August 8th, 1875 and his baptism took place on November 7th, 1875 in Rouxville.  Philippus' father was Gert Lukas Martens and his mother was Cornelia  Johanna Swanepoel (Philippina).  His maternal grandparents were Philippus Johannes Swanepoel (Cornelius) and Cornelia Johanna Gouws. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Hendrick, Hendrik, Gert, Charles , Johan, Thomas , Cornelia and Elizabeth.  He was the third oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 54 on July 13th, 1930.
