General Notes
From Tweefontein, Burgersdorp. He then moved to Barkley East and lived on the farm Tenterin near the Belriver that belonged to a Pretorius. This is where the town Rhodes or Rossville now stands. The farmers Jacobus de Wet, Frederick van Wyk, H. van Wyk, Gert Cloete, and Hendrik Janse van Rensburg decided to have the farm measured and purchase it for the establishment of the town Rhodes. The hope was that Cecil John Rhodes would take notice and wonderful things would happen for the town....but nothing came of it. The town was later renames Rossville after a minister Dr. Ross of Lady Grey who often went on horseback to Rhodes and Barkley East to do a service.
In 1875 he moved from Rhodes to Griuqualand East and bought the farm Nooitgedacht at Polela in the Underberg. No whites lived in the area at the time. Here lightning struck the house and Hendrina van der Merwe was killed. Casper and Tjaart were already married and had moved with their father. More material available from P 85 of the booklet.
