Nicolaas was born on December 25th, 1723 in Drakenstein.  Nicolaas' father was Johann Wilhelm Grobler and his mother was Geertruyd Knoetzen.  His maternal grandparents were Cornelis Knoetzen and Dirkje Helms. He had six brothers and six sisters, named Johannes, Willem, Petrus, Coert, Cornelis, Jan, Catharina, Cornelia, Geertruy, Dorothea, Dirkje and Geertruy.
