Gilbert was born on June 11th, 1889. Gilbert's father was Donald (David, Doyi or Doy) Isla Houston McMillan and his mother was Jacoba Helena Van Whye. His paternal grandparents were John (Mashibana) William Houston McMillan and Sarah A Sykes. He had six brothers and two sisters, named William, Oupa Dad, Frederick, John, Richard, Donald, Sarah and Cecilia. He had a half-sibling of unknown gender. He died at the age of 82 on November 30th, 1971.-
