Abraham was born on January 26th, 1902 in Matatiele and his baptism took place on January 25th, 1903 in Cedarville.  Abraham's father was Abraham Lourens Daniel Maartens and his mother was Zachryda Catharina de Bruin.  His paternal grandparents were Hendrik Joachim Maartens and Elizabeth Magdalena van Jaarsveld; his maternal grandparents were Pieter Philippus Nicolaas de Bruin and Johanna Maria Magdalena van der Merwe. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Hendrik, David, Pieter, Johanna, Magdalena, Zachryda, Elizabeth and Petronella.  He was the third youngest of the nine children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Stephan, Adriaan and Helena.  He died at the age of 60 on September 18th, 1962 in Natal.  He was buried in Kwazulu-Natal, LADYSMITH, Main cemetery.
