Nicolaas Francois Maartens (Nicholaas) 
Nicolaas was born on July 29th, 1885 in Barkley East and his baptism took place there on January 16th, 1886. Nicolaas' father was Joachim Hendrik Maartens and his mother was Cornelia Herculina van Wyk. His paternal grandparents were Nicolaas Francois Maartens and Cecilia Maria Coetzee; his maternal grandparents were Andries Petrus van Wyk and Cornelia Herculina van Heerden. He had seven brothers and six sisters, named Andries, Joachim, Pieter, Gert, Jacobus, Gideon, Schalk, Cornelia, Cecilia, Elizabeth, Louisa, Susan and Magdalena. He was the oldest of the fourteen children. He died at the age of 70 in 1955 in Natal.-
