Paulus was born on May 24th, 1870 and his baptism took place on August 7th, 1870 in Winburg. Paulus' father was David Schalk Maartens and his mother was Martha Susanna Nel. His paternal grandparents were Paulus Jacobus Maartens and Johanna Catharina van der Merwe; his maternal grandparents were Jan Hendrik Nel and Martha Susanna Saaiman. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Paulus, Johannes, David, Hendrik, Pieter, Martha, Johanna, Hester and Helena. He was the fifth youngest of the ten children. He died at the age of 83 on June 27th, 1953 in "Corneliasrust", Excelsior" Distrik Winburg.General Notes
