Gert was born on April 9th, 1912 in Rouxville. Gert's father was Hendrik Jacobus Martens and his mother was Magdalena Elizabeth Pelser. His paternal grandparents were Gert Lukas Martens and Cornelia Johanna Swanepoel (Philippina); his maternal grandparents were Pieter Andries Pelser (Hendrik) and Magdalena Elizabeth Pelser. He had a sister named Magdalena. He was the younger of the two children. He had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Hendrik, Johannes, Cornelia and Anna. He died at the age of 56 on March 30th, 1969 in Springkell Hospital, Johannesburg.-
