When he married Elizabeth he was farming on Table Mountain/
He built the homestead on Doornhoek, Bishopstowe.
Hendrik Jacobus Philippus Martens (1849-1935)(son of Jan Thomas 1st who was granted land for a farm in that area). Over the years Doornhoek was divided up into about 5 lots. The house was built from shale quarried from the farm lands, cement and mud, and took about three years to complete. Yellowwood was used for the beams and ceilings. Today the roofing is still the original galvanised iron and is still leakproof. Hendrik built the house for his bride Elizabeth Magnus who had come out to South Africa to stay with the Bishop of Colenso. When Hendrik died his son Alexander Phillip took over the farm and from him it passed to his son, the present owner, Alexander Magnus Martens and his wife Norma. In the valley which Doornhoek overlooks is a small cemetery encloised with a stone wall that contain the graves of early settlers including that of Hendrik.
