Barend Johannes Pretorius 
Barend was born in 1856. Barend's father was Marthinus Wessel Pretorius and his mother was Debora Jacoba Retief. His paternal grandparents were Henning Petrus Pretorius (Nicolaas) and Johanna Christina Vorster. He had seven brothers named Henning, Pieter, Marthinus, Johanna, Jacobus, Jacobus and Andries. He was the second youngest of the eight children.-
