Elizabeth was born on June 19th, 1866 and her baptism took place on November 11th, 1866. Elizabeth's father was Johann Heinrich Ries and her mother was Martha Elizabeth Johanna Martens. Her maternal grandparents were Jan Thomas(1) Martens and Anna Maria Isabella Coetzee. She had four brothers and six sisters, named Johannes, Jan , Johannes , Hartman , Anna , Catherina , Martha , Maria , Margaretha and Victoria . She was the third youngest of the eleven children.-
