Francois was born on May 19th, 1865 in Olievenskop, Bloemfontein Dist.. Francois' father was Joachim Hendrik Maartens and his mother was Catharina Anna Francina Groenewald (Elizabeth). His paternal grandparents were Joachim Hendrik Maartens and Martha Margaretha Maria Joubert; his maternal grandparents were Jacobus Hermanus Groenewald and Maria Margaretha Groenewald (Susanna). He had two brothers and eight sisters, named Jacobus, David, Maria, Catharina, Hendrina, Jacoba, Martha, Margaretha, Petronella and Johanna. He was the sixth oldest of the eleven children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Joachim and Maria. He died at the age of 70 on September 17th, 1935 in Christiana. He was buried in Christiana ou begraafplaas.General Notes
