Gerhardus was born on April 27th, 1703 in Paarl and his christening took place there on April 27th, 1703.  Gerhardus' father was Johannes  Oosthuizen and his mother was Johanna (Jannetje) Maartens.  His maternal grandparents were Mr Mr Maartens and Mrs Mrs Maartens. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Jan, Jacobus, Johanna, Barbara, Elsie and Petronella.  He was the oldest of the seven children.
