Jan was born about 1714 in Swellendam and his christening took place on November 4th, 1714 in Drakenstein.  Jan's father was Johannes  Oosthuizen and his mother was Johanna (Jannetje) Maartens.  His maternal grandparents were Mr Mr Maartens and Mrs Mrs Maartens. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Gerhardus, Jacobus, Johanna, Barbara, Elsie and Petronella.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
