Gerrit was born about 1776 and his baptism took place on March 24th, 1776. Gerrit's father was Coenraad Scheepers and his mother was Elsje Oosthuizen. His paternal grandparents were Gerrit Scheepers and Susanna Bruwel; his maternal grandparents were GerhardusOosthuizen and Magdalena Neeff. He had four brothers and six sisters, named Frederik, Coenraad, Johannes, Jan, Magdalena, Catharina, Elsje, Petronella, Johanna and Elsie. He was the sixth oldest of the eleven children.-
