Jan was born in 1783 in Drakenstein.  Jan's father was Jan Christoffel van der Berg and his mother was Elsie van Emmenes.  His paternal grandparents were Jacobus van der Berg and Maria Magdalena Haak ; his maternal grandfather was Gerrit van Emmenes and his maternal grandmother is <Unknown>. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Jacobus, Gerrit, Anna, Maria, Elsie and Johanna.  He was the youngest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 73 in 1856.
