Hendrik was born about 1823 in Graaff Reinet. Hendrik's father was Hendrik Jacobus van der Merwe and his mother was Hester Sophia Maartens. His paternal grandfather is Hendrik Jacobus van der Merwe and his paternal grandmother was Maria van Wijk; his maternal grandparents were Joachim Hendrik Martens and Hendrina Magdalena van der Merwe. He had five sisters named Hendrina, Anna, Maria, Johanna and Jacomina. He had an adopted brother named Marthinus. He died on August 25th, 1885 in "Buysfontein", Potchefstroom dist..General Notes
