Jan Hendrik Maartens 
Jan was born on August 10th, 1887 in Rhodes, Barkley East. Jan's father was Louwrens Petrus Erasmus Maartens and his mother was Louisa Catharina Susanna Henning. His paternal grandparents were Hendrik Joachim Maartens and Elizabeth Magdalena van Jaarsveld; his maternal grandparents were Jan Hendrik Henning and Hester Elizabeth Hatting (Margaretha). He had eleven brothers and two sisters, named Hendrik, Lourens, Daniel, Adriaan, Louis, Abraham, Matthys, Nicolaas, Matthys, Pieter, Erasmus, Hester and Elizabeth. He was the second oldest of the fourteen children. He died at the age of 79 on February 19th, 1967 in Nasionale Hospitaal, Bloemfontein.General Notes
