Hendrik was born on September 1st, 1801 and his baptism took place on March 7th, 1802 in Stellenbosch.  Hendrik's father was Jacobus Martens and his mother was Maria Magdalena Joubert.  His paternal grandparents were Joachim Heinrich Martens and Jacomina van den Berg; his maternal grandparents were Josua Joachim Joubert and Maria Magdalena van der Berg. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Jacobus, Jozua, Jacobus, Jan, Nicolaas, Maria, Jacomina, Anna, Johanna and Anna.  He was the fifth youngest of the eleven children.  He died at the age of 85 on February 27th, 1887 in Greytown.  He was buried in Sophiadale.
