Hendrik , known as Lang Hendrik, was born on April 4th, 1848 in Pietermaritzburg.  Lang Hendrik's father was Hendrik Jacobus Martens and his mother was Elizabeth Maria Roos.  His paternal grandparents were Jacobus Martens and Maria Magdalena Joubert. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Jacobus, Jan, Susanna, Elizabeth, Maria and Wilemina.  He was the second youngest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 71 on September 23rd, 1919 in In his house on Sophiadale..  He was buried in Sophiadale.

• General Notes

  He farmed on Wuthering Heights as some of his children came from there at time of marriage.
  According to his DN he was living at Sophiadale at the time of his death. When he died the following children had already died;
  Jan Thomas
  Jacobus
  Dewald Johannes
  Gert Lucas signed his DN.
  According to the Will the following;
  Charles Gustav gets Whiterock, 3000acres
  Jacobus Martens gets 2600 acres of Raw and Greehams Land, name unknown.
  Gert Lucas gets Welverdient,
  Paul Petrus and Stephanus Johannes equally gets Vlakvarklaaget and Sophiadale.
  Then there was a trus fund set up and the children gall got one eighth shares.
  NOW; Zondana, 2123 acres and Toggekry, 600 acres to make up Wuthering Heights.
  The other farms mentioned are Onrust (part of Welverdient)  and Heartsease in Weenen county, as well as Krantzkloof (rented). Also Malingane which was a portion of Wuthering Heights.
  
  What was disconcerting is that in the execution of the will half of Wuthering Heights and Togekry was to go to "Dewald Johannes Van der Merwe Martens, son of Dewald Johannes Martens minor (deceased son of the late H.J.Martens)".

  Two strains of Spanish Flu hit SA in Sep 1918. The less virulent strain entered via Durban and spread rapidly to the Witwatersrand whist the second and more virulent strain entered Cape Town from Freetown, Sierra Leone on 13 Sep 1918. It spread quickly on two axes causing many deaths.
