Jan Thomas Martens 
Jan was born on April 29th, 1856 in Pietermaritzburg and his baptism took place on January 19th, 1857. Jan's father was Hendrik Jacobus Martens and his mother was Elizabeth Maria Roos. His paternal grandparents were Jacobus Martens and Maria Magdalena Joubert. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Jacobus, Lang Hendrik, Susanna, Elizabeth, Maria and Wilemina. He was the youngest of the seven children.-
