Johannes Lodewicus Maartens 
Johannes was born about 1799 in Graaff Reinet and his baptism took place there on July 28th, 1799. Johannes' father was Joachim Hendrik Martens and his mother was Hendrina Magdalena van der Merwe. His paternal grandparents were Joachim Heinrich Martens and Jacomina van den Berg; his maternal grandparents were David Schalk van der Merwe and Anna Maria Pretorius. He had six brothers and seven sisters, named Joachim, Dawid, Paulus, Willem, Nicolaas, Daniel, Anna, Jacomina, Hendriena, Hester, Elizabeth, Aletta and Martha. He was the seventh youngest of the fourteen children. He died after 1871.General Notes
