Susanna was born on September 14th, 1829 in Graaff Reinet and her baptism took place there on October 5th, 1829.1  Susanna's father was Joachim Hendrik Martens and her mother was Louisa Maria Grobbelaar.  Her paternal grandparents were Matthÿs Daniel Martens and Susanna Haarhof; her maternal grandparents were Johannes Jacobus Grobbelaar and Elizabeth Margaretha van Jaarsveld. She had nine brothers and three sisters, named Matthys, Johannes, Hendrik, Albertus, Paulus, Choert, Willem Golden Fleece, Petrus, Nicolaas, Elizabeth, Louisa and Susanna.  She was the sixth oldest of the thirteen children.  She died from cancer, Stomache cancer, at the age of 72 on February 6th, 1902 in in her tent in Aliwal North Concentration Camp.
