Cornelis Coetzee Geertruy Gerrits 1914 - 2003 Douglas Ernest Clapham 89 89 Douglas Ernest born 04 November 1914. He married Marjorie MARTENS on 11 July 1940. He was a display artist and also a cyclist. He had one son, and the family lived at Worthney, Esikoleni. He died in Pietermaritzburg in 2003.

From Jon Clapham:
Most of my resorces come from my gramps Doug Clapham who belonged to the Geneology and Heraldic societey of S.A and UK as he used to do Heraldry and Family trees. I've also used other sites to confirm his resorces. He was also the curator for most of the war Museums in KZN. He also did a lot of the Coat of Arms for Schools and Cities eg Greytown, Escort etc and the Comrades Marothon badge obviously cause my Great Gramps Vic was the founder.

I believe a lot of Jan Thomas's belongings are in the Voortrekker Museum in PMB. I'm just waiting for more info which my dads cousin Gordon Martens to send me some more info and photo's Unfortunately he's in Pretoria and I'm on the West Coast in the Cape
1886 - 1962 Victor Clapham 75 75 Son of William and Eleanor CLAPHAM
Founder of the Comrades Marathon. It owes its origin, title and ethos to Victor (Vic) CLAPHAM, the founder of the Comrades Marathon. He was so inspired by the dedication, stamina and bravery of his fellow soldiers in World War I that he decided to start an annual event to commemorate the fallen soldiers and to express his gratitude to one comrade who saved his life. The race has been run every year since 1921, except for the years 1941-1945 during World War II.

His World War I attestation form records that he served in the Cradock Town Guard and the Cape Peninsula Rifles during the Anglo-Boer War. There was a V. CLAPHAM and a W. CLAPHAM in the Cradock Town Guard according to WO100/280.

With the outbreak of World War I, Victor volunteered with the 8th South African Infantry and took part in the East African Campaign in German East Africa (now Tanzania). He suffered through blackwater fever, dysentery and malaria. After collapsing one day, a comrade, Ernest FREEMANTLE, carried him for more than 50 km in over 40 degrees Celsius heat. Victor was sent home to Pietermaritzburg via Mombasa by wagon and then hospital ship. He was medically boarded in 1917. He worked as a fireman for the Natal Government Railways, and enrolled for further studies. He graduated with top marks and was presented with a oak desk. Victor later became a train driver for the South African Railways. He married Nellie Eliza PARKS in Ladysmith in October 1912. She was born in Eastbourne, Sussex, England, daughter of James PARKS.
The returning WWI soldiers formed the League of Comrades of the Great War. In 1918, Victor approached them with his idea for a road race between Pietermaritzburg and Durban. It was not welcomed. He tried again in 1919 and 1920, and was again rejected. He persisted until he gained approval in 1921 and received a loan of £1 to have the race run under the League's auspices.
During his life time, Victor was responsible for starting 15 MOTH (Member of the Tin Hat) Shellholes in South Africa. He was later in charge of the Warrior's Gate MOTH Museum in Durban. He died on 05 October 1962. Nellie died on 07 May 1962.

In 2011, Victor's great-grandson, Anthony CLAPHAM, ran the Comrades, becoming the only family member to complete the race. His grandfather was Victor James. Anthony lives in Pietermaritzburg, and his sport of choice is cycling in races like The Argus.
D. 1962 Nellie Eliza Parks 1913 - 1994 Victor James Clapham 80 80 He married Helen Felicitas Minnie Thelma Vivienne Marguerite (aka Vivienne Marguerite, born 23 July 1910, died in 1995 at Braemar Nursing Home in Pinetown). He died on 19 July 1994 and last lived at 32 Chapel Road, Botha's Hill. He was a graphic artist. Vic joined the Army when World War II broke out. He was involved in founding the Springbok Legion, a politically liberal organisation for soldiers and veterans. After the war he worked as an information official for the United Party, and as cartoonist for The Guardian newspaper. In 1931 he took part in the Comrades but had to pull out with cramps. Later he joined Lindsay Smithers, rising to Creative Director of what was to become one of South Africa's largest advertising agencies. He founded the First Hillcrest Scouts. In 1976 he was awarded the Bronze Wolf by the World Scout Committee for exceptional services to world Scouting. His illustrations appeared in South African and international Scout publications. He established the Veld Lore newspaper at his Rover Crew in Natal in about 1947, which soon became the provincial publication and then the national newspaper for Scouts. He continued publishing it until his death. He pioneered the Join-In Jamboree concept for Scouts in their home countries during World Scout Jamborees. The concept earned the highest award from the Public Relations Society of America in 1976. Hugh Albert Clapham He was a Sergeant with 2 Royal Durban Light Infantry and 4 Brigade 2 South African Division (Union Defence Force) in World War II. He was mentioned in despatches. 1920 Marcus Leonard Clapham He married Ada DE VILLIERS on 30 August 1943. He was a long distance cyclist, and served in World War II. Marc worked for the South African Railways and lived at 397 Burger Street, Pietermaritzburg. 1922 Eric William Clapham Married Winifred Sarah McGILL, divorced in 1962. He died on 19 June 2006 and was to married Barbara Ann (born 02 Nov 1939). They lived at 31 Orient Road, Wynberg, Cape Town. Ronald Parks Clapham born in Pietermaritzburg. He married Pauline Margaret PRETORIUS. They divorced in 1956-1957. He died in 1958, and at the time was married to Thelma Winifred. Peter Camm Sic: My great-great-great-grandfather arrived in South Africa as one of the English 1820 Settlers. I have managed to trace him to having been born in Halifax. His name was John Philip Camm. His father was Peter Camm. John Philip Camm came to South Africa with his father's brother, Christopher Thornhill Camm. Christopher was permitted to change his name to Thornhill in order to inherit an estate from an uncle John Camm. ~1927 - ~1987 Petrus Johannes Calitz 60 60 ~1929 - ~1996 Abraham Mattheus Calitz 67 67 ~1939 - ~2000 Petronella Nicolina Calitz 61 61 Maria Johanna Cronje (Susanna) Fourie Susanna Margrieta Cronje (Hendrika) Taljaard Frederik Johannes Cronje Hendrik Christoffel Cronje ~1896 Cornelius Jacobus Coetzee 1888 - 1926 Jan Thomas Martens 38 38 Have Death notice

Rod Gregory The old road down to Lilani was only wide enough for one car width....with a warning of hooting at the many blind bends drivers warned others coming in the opposite direction.....there were only a couple of wider plateaus on some bends where one had to halt to allow the other cars to pass. Also there were no security railings along the route.......I last went down there in 1954 and it was one hairy experience. In bad weather it was next to Harikiri ...in good weather you needed your fingers crossed as a passenger !!!!!! Breathtaking and very rewarding once you were there. My mother (from Kranskop and family ( Freese from Crammond) frequented the spa in their youth.

The Lilani Hot springs are situated about 12 miles, as the crow flies, to the east of Greytown, but the intervening country is so rough that in order to get there a journey of about 18 to 20 miles has bo be undertaken. The Springs are on the side of a very steep hill. The Springs were developed by the late Dr Matthews. A large house was built and the water led into bathrooms, and many people visit Lilani to enjoy the healing properties of the waters, which are very soothing to sufferers from rheumatism, gout and similar complaints. The property is now leased by Mr H J Comins, of Seven Oaks, who sub-lets apartments to visitors.

I am assuming that Jacoba Christoffelina Frederika DU PLESSIS was incorrectly allocated to Hendrik Bernardus and that Hendrik Bernardus was actually Hendrik Johannes Jacob Coetzee. Both him and the father Abrham Jacobus has been identified with Winnaarsbaken.

Story: The South African Police was established in 1913 as a national police force. It had a secondary military role, which came to the fore in World War I and again in World War II.

[edit]1923-1963

The SAP was eligible for the British King's Police Medal, which was awarded annually throughout the British Empire. This was discontinued in 1933, because South Africa had become independent as a member of the new British Commonwealth, and it was replaced in 1937 by a special South African issue of the medal. From 1923, the SAP also had its own long service medal, which doubled as a medal for gallantry. The medals available to the SAP between 1923 and 1963 were thus:

Decoration

Queen's Police Medal (South Africa) (1937-61)

Campaign medal

Africa Service Medal (1943)

Long service medal

Police Good Service Medal (1923-63)

Until 1952, they were incorporated into the British honours system. Thereafter they formed part of the new South African honours system.

POLICE RECORD

J M Calitz who was born on 13 June 1891 and who attested in the South African Police on 12 June 1915.

He received his Police Good Service Medal for 18 years service on 25 September 1933, recorded as Transkei Division. He was a Constable and his service number was 5560(M). The (M) stands for Mounted.

His medal is recorded in police Force Order 39 of 1933.

Story: History Of Zastron

Posted by saflyfisherman

Zastron used to be the home of many Bushmen who lived in the surrounding sandstone caves. Their legacy lives on in their rock paintings on the surrounding farms. Even after the Bushmen left, the fertile land belonged to no-one and was inhabited by countles antelope, including Springbok, Gnus, Blesbok and Hartebees.

Jan Hendrik de Winnaar, a farmer from Aliwal North, set up camp in the Smithfield area and hunted north-east accross the Trans Gariep, stumbling upon the Zastron area. He moved his family and home to the foot of Aasvoëlberg (vulture mountain) in 1838 and was joined by his brother, Reynier Petrus.

In 1840 the renowned Kwena chief, Moshweshwe, paid them a visit. He and the De Winnaars got along well and Moshweshwe decided to "grant" the brothers the land in exchange for a favour.

Moshweshwe loved yellow peaches and requested that they plant many yellow peach trees on their fertile land, giving him an annual tribute in the form of fresh, dried, preserved and brandied fruit.
The De Winnaars shared his love for yellow peaches and happily obliged with his request, planting trees wherever they went, always making sure that they carried a handful of pips in their pockets when taking a walk or a drive with their wagon. For a while the de Winaars' land was known as the "Yellow Peach Republic".

The Caledon river valley found itself in political ferment and the De Winnaars was forced to leave. After their return, feuds between rivel Sotho tribes, Bushmen, white frontiermen, renegades, bandits and settlers ruled the day. In 1855 the cattlerustling, raids and killings drove the De Winnaars from the area once again. Sir George Grey finally came to Smithfield and held a meeting at which a treaty was drawn up to control the area.

The Orange Free State declared war against the Sotho people in 1858 and invaded the Caledon River valley from both the north and the south. Upon reaching Moshweshwe's stronghold in Thaba Bosiu, they soon realised that they were fighting a losing battle and, to their dismay, were forced to retreat.
After three years of chaos the British stepped in and the land was declared a British protectorate, complete with a new frontier line.

In 1869 Jan Hendrik and Reynier got part of their land back in a general agreement, although it was only "a measly 3 530 ha" of the original grant. Jan named it "Verliesfontein" (Fountain of loss) and farmed the land with prosperous yields until his death on 3 June 1874 at age 77.

The need for a town in the area became urgent, since the nearest school, business and church was situated at Rouxville, over 30km away. Verliesfontein was the chosen site for a town and Zastron became a reality in 1876, named in honour of President Brand's wife, Johanna Sibella Zastrauw, who was born in Poland.

Reynier was renowned for his highly embroidered stories and he was always backed by his ever faithful side-kick, a Bushman known as "Vosmerrie". When Reynier's stories became far-fetched and the listeners were starting to doubt its truth, Vosmerrie would make himself heard by simply adding "Dis reg, baas." (that's true, master). It is said that when Pres. Brand visited Zastron, Reynier was to join them for dinner and delight everyone with his tales around the camp fire.
On 3 Dec 1883, aged 102 (although his true birth date is disputed), Reynier fell ill and passed away peacefully after three days in bed.

In 16 March 1882 Zastron became a municipality and became the warm town on the Lesotho border we know today.

1824 - 1892 Jacobus Cornelis Martens 68 68 Voortrekker
DN has his death date as 6 MAR 1892.
Lived in the Agter-Sneeuberg (vroeer ondedr Graff-Reinet en later onder Cradock.) , Somerset.
South African Genealogies; GAFN, p340; Manuskrip van Dr J.A.Heese, RGN Library states: It is possible that he moved to Natal much later after his father as his 5th child (&after?) was born in PMB Visagie tells the same story in Voortrekkerstamouers.
At the time of his birth his parents were living in the Veldkornetskap of Veldkornet S. Coetzee
He was only 10 in 1834 when the Trek started. It must be assumed that he possibly moved back to Graaff Reinet as his parents would not have left him behind at that age. I question Heeses's assumption.
