Willem was born on December 7th, 1844. Willem's father was Willem Pieter Grobbelaar and his mother was Hendrina Magdalena Jansen van Rensburg. His paternal grandparents were Johannes Jacobus Grobbelaar and Elizabeth Margaretha van Jaarsveld; his maternal grandparents were Hendrik Petrus Jansen van Rensburg and Jacomina Jacoba Martens. He had a brother and four sisters, named Hendrik, Jacomina, Elizabeth, Elsie and Hendrina. He was the second youngest of the six children.-
