born 10 0ctober 1678 in Tangermünde, a town 100 km west from Berlin, Germany. He came to South Africa in about 1708. He was then in the service of the VOC and was employed as a woodcutter and later as a transport driver. We find him in 1712 in the service of Christiaan Maasdorp as a farm labourer. He became a free burger in 1715 and in the same year he married Geertruyd KNOESEN who was baptised on 11 July 1706 daughter of stamvader Cornelis Knoetzen and Dirkje Helms. On 3 June 1736 Geertruyd married stamvader Jan Jurgen Herman (also known as Hans Jurgen Herman(n) from Stuttgart), two months and 3 days after the birth of her youngest son - eleventh child Cornelis Grobler.

My record indicated that only the four children that went to Concentration Camp were hers. But that is belied by the fact that the first 6 children does coincide with their date of marriage.

I suspect that she died before the war as the 4 youngest children (excluding the last, Josef Johannes) were all together on the same farm without parents when they were captured and take to camp (Bloemfontein RC) with the other 55 people found on the farm. Additionally, Gertruida Elizabeth was registered as the head of the family. Speculate that she died in childbirth with Josef Johannes as no further record of him could be located.
1856 - <1936 Jacobus Hermanus Maartens 80 80 According to his marriage certificate his date of birth should be 1854

1920 - 1981 Leslie Herbert Gebhardt 61 61 Mary McKechnie 1951 Roderick Leslie Gebhardt Roderick Leslie is the fifth child of Leslie Herbert GEBHARDT and Mary MCKECHNIE. I was born at the Far East Rand Hospital in Springs, with a clubbed right foot, which appears to be an hereditary ailment in our family. My sister Rosemary and two of her children have it as well. Othe members of our family also have the same ailment but to a far lesser degree than Rosemary and I.
My earliest memories are of a cot in the Hope Home Children’s Home in Johannesburg, where Rosemary and I spent just over a year of our early lives. What I remember very clearly is that at the end of my cot there was a missing bar through which my sister used to climb, after grabbing a few cookies off the night duty nurses table, and we used to enjoy a late night snack. Needless to say in the morning I got the blame because my bed was full of crumbs. But then…what are younger brothers for, if not to be the fall guy.
For approximately 18 months I had to have plaster on my leg which was used to straighten the ankle and foot after surgery was performed to set the ankle straight. This plaster had to be replaced periodically and these were my nightmare moments. I remember sitting on a trolley or gurney in the hospital passage watching a nurse, using what appeared to be the biggest pair of pruning shears I had ever seen, cutting the plaster off. The howling I put up would have made me a good fire engine siren, as I thought she was going to off cut my leg. Those were the old days of doing things to correct a problem such as we had.

~1909 William Manderson Grieve NN ~1906 Catherina Cornelia Goldman "Catharina Cornelia Fourie Aka Kathleen Goldman" appears as her name on the marriage certificate. He was divorced when he married her. 1910 - 1993 Henry John Thomas Martens 82 82 He and Peggy were living at Golden Pond at Hilton
According to his marriage certificate it was a civil marriage signed by the magistrate, Family records indicate that he was married at Boschoff St Methodist Church but I have no record of that. It could possibly have been solemnised there.
Did another search (Jul 2013) and could not locate his marriage to Peggy at all under Natal marriages.

Make sure that it was him who married Kathleen Goldman. Otherwise there is another Henry with the same birth year.

The Observatory Museum[edit]

Part of the analemma which amateur astronomer Galpin inscribed on the floor of the Meridian Room
In 1859, Henry Carter Galpin bought a simple double-storey establishment in Bathurst Street for £300. During the next 23 years he made extensive changes. The front was elegantly decorated, and a basement and three floors added to the back. Rooftop developments included an observatory, from which the building took its name, and what was for many years the only Camera Obscura in the Southern Hemisphere.

Born in 1820 in Dorset, England, Galpin trained as an architect, surveyor and civil engineer, as well as a chronometer, clock and watchmaker. These skills, together with his keen interest in optics and astronomy, are reflected throughout The Observatory- the most unusual Victorian home and business premises in South Africa.

Galpin's thriving watchmaker and jeweller's shop was run by three of his seven sons after his death in 1886, including Ernest Edward Galpin. They sold to Messrs Leader and Krummeck in 1939. Several businesses occupied the ground floor while the basement and upper floors were divided into flats and lodgings.

By the end of the 1970s the structure was dilapidated and unsound. The historic link with the identification of the Eureka diamond led to the purchase and restoration of the Observatory by De Beers Consolidated Mines Limited.

The building was subsequently proclaimed a National Monument and presented to the Albany Museum to form part of its History Division. Exhibits were arranged, and The Observatory Museum was opened by Mr. Harry F. Oppenheimer, the then Chairman of De Beers, on 2 February 1983.

Diane Sheila Ginnetty 1950 Mark Lindsay Martens I was schooled at King Edward VII prep school in Johannesburg and St. John's College next door where I matriculated. After a year in the SADF at 3 Loc Bty in Potchefstroom, I studied Engineering at Wits, graduating in 1973. I worked at Iscor in Pretoria for 4 years, during which time I married Anne-Marie Georgia Paizis on January 19, 1974. She was the elder of 2 daughters to Denis Milton Paizis from Parga, Greece and Regina Clarkson from Leeds, England. In 1979 we immigrated to Canada where my son Nicolas Yves Hammond was born in Vancouver, Canada on January 30, 1980. He is an only child. I formed Hammond Engineering Inc in 1983  in Vancouver to provide consulting electrical engineering services to industrial clients. The lion's share of our business was in bulk materials handling, mostly grain, canola seed and other cereal products. I divorced in 2002, retired and moved to Greece, settling on Skopelos Island in the Aegean Sea. There I met Diane Sheila Sheehy (nee' Ginnetty). Diane was the youngest daughter of Paul Edward Ginnetty and Irene Veronica Skalecki of Randolph, Ma in the USA. She is a BFA graduate from Mass College of Art. We moved to the USA in 2007 to be near her children and were married in Austin, TX on May 5, 2009 (Civil ceremony) and again on July 26, 2009 in the Greek Orthodox church, also in Austin. We watched the 3 grandchildren grow up to be teenagers and decided to move to the coast in 2014. We currently live in the tiny hamlet of Arroyo City in deep south Texas on the banks of the Arroyo Colorado River which is part of the US intra-coastal waterway system. We have access by boat to the Laguna Madre and the Gulf of Mexico. If you search for us on Google Maps you'll see us in a remote corner of the state. We are about 40 miles from Brownsville and the Mexican border.
Diane and I have a blog www.ArroyoCityNews.wordpress.com that we use as an information source for our community. Please give us a look.
We love your site. Diane has been searching for her Skalecki roots in Ruthenia (modern day Western Ukraine) but has run into all manner of brick walls. Her Ginnetty Irish side has been a little easier, but there remains some very murky episodes in the past. She loves the fact that I can trace my family back so far.
Please keep up the excellent work and if I can help you in any way, just say the word. I realize that Texas is a long way from South Africa, but we have a few ex-pats here along the Rio Grande. I am doing some substitute teaching in the local school district and the kids have asked me to coach them in a rugby team. Perhaps you will see us in the news one day as the only school in Texas with a rugby team - possibly with no one to play against! Despite the Protea push, we shall be the Springboks!
I would love to hear back from you,
