"Oh! some more interesting news is that they stumbled about a place called Higg's Hope. This is just down river from Douglas and when they got there, they met a farmer who invited them to join them for a braai. When they told him their story he said 'O ja! Ek't van julle manne gehoor!' ANYWAY, the story around Higg's Hope is that old Mr Higgs settled there ages ago and some of the richest diamonds were found on this farm. The farmer who met the boys was this old Mr Higg's grandson."

First proclaimed diggings took place on Brakf ontein in 1925; it was called Higgs Hope, after the earlier f amily of Mr J J Higgs, the owner of the f arm. The area had a chequered history of exploration, with as many as 9 000 people living on Higgs Hope during an of ficial census of 1928. The last of the “old timers” lef t in April 1992. Shortly after that, diggers with modern eart h moving equipment moved in, and managed t o break the hard calcrete layer that kept the “old timers” f rom working the underlying diamondif erous gravel. In the mid 1990’s mining rights to Saxendrift/Brakf ont ein were acquired by Northern Cape Diamonds (Pty) Ltd, one of
the later subsidiaries of Gem Diamonds (Pty) Ltd. I n May 2000 t he latter company was merged with Trans Hex Mining Ltd.

She was the third child and second girl of the five children of Clement Higgs and his wife Florence. In 1912, Higgs's father died at the age of 50. In 1916, Higgs became a boarder at the Wesleyan Girls' High School in Grahamstown. Her oldest brother, Clement jr., was killed in 1916 in World War I. Higgs briefly enrolled in the Grahamstown School of Art in 1918, however in 1920 she sailed to England and stayed abroad for 13 years. She trained in London at the Byam Shaw School of Art, Goldsmiths' College and, from 1926, at the Royal Academy of Arts. Higgs was called back to South Africa, however, due to the illness of her mother which resulted in her death in 1934. Higgs held her first solo exhibition in the Domestic Science hall of Stellenbosch University in 1935, meeting the painter Wolf Kibel and the sculptor Lippy Lipshitz. In 1938, she held a joint exhibition with Rene Graetz, Maggie Laubser and Lippy Lipshitz. In 1938 she returned to Paris, however she left due to World War II. Higgs joined the New Group which was revolting against tradition forms of art. In 1939, Higgs began a lifelong friendship with English painter John Dronsfield. In 1953, she held her only solo exhibition in the Orange Free State. Higgs eventually settled in Sea Point, however the influence of the sea in her paintings led to her label as a marine painter. In 1964, she built a house in Onrust. Higgs was eventually diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease and in 1984 she moved to Protea Park Nursing Home where she died on 16 June 1986.
In 1964, Higgs was awarded the gold medal of the Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie van Wetenskap en Kuns.

he progenitors of the Houston-McMillan family in South Africa were John and Sarah Ann Houston.  John, the son of John McMillan and Mary McIntyre, was born at Cardyhouse, Kilmun in 1822.1 Kilmun is a settlement on the north shore of the Holy Loch in Argyll and Bute in south-west Scotland.*  John grew up in Kilmun and on 12th December 1849 married Sarah Ann Sykes at Gretna Green.2  Sarah Ann, who was born in Lancaster on 27th August 1830, was the daughter of Solomon Sykes and Eliza Gregson. 3

John and Sarah were married at Gretna Green on 12th December 1849.**  Their first son, John Solomon, was born in Durban on 4 October 1850, and thus they must have arrived in Natal some time in the middle of 1850.  According to a number of family sources John and Sarah were bound for Australia, but because John was so seasick they disembarked in Durban.  This belief is supported by the fact that John had a book in his possession entitled A Voyage to New South Wales written in 1787.

The family surname is a source of some confusion.  John was born a McMillan***, but by the time the family arrived in Natal they were calling themselves Houston.  It is not clear why this was so.  There are a number of colourful family legends for the reasons why John changed his name; one being that he did so to escape Britain after killing or badly wounding a man in a duel. He could also have changed his name when he and Sarah ran away to be married at Gretna Green.  By the last three decades of the nineteenth century various branches of the family had begun to incorporate McMillan with Houston.

By the last three decades of the nineteenth century various branches of the family had begun to incorporate McMillan with Houston.

The Lodge (Benmore) - In 1872 the Houston family moved to the Lodge (sometimes called Ixopo Lodge), on which John
ran a hotel and farmed. The Lodge is close to the" town of Ixopo. The Lodge, was an amalgamation of 4 pieces of land:
the remainder of Court Hill (801 acres and 31.48 perches); subdivision A of subdivision A of Court Hill (2 acres/ 3
roods, 34 perches); subdivision C of the remain"der of Ixopo (101acres, 1 rood, 28 perches) and Ogle's Land (60 acres). John's son Alexander later owned it. John called one of the pieces of land Benmore."
Waterfall - In 1869 or 1870 John Houston bought the farm Waterfall in the Ixopo region, where he traded and ran a
wayside inn. Waterfall is in the Umkomaas Valley as you cross the river. It is on the left hand side of the road fro"m
Pietermaritzburg to Ixopo and is now called Whiskey Canyon .
The Creighton District
Ambleside - This farm over time was owned by three members of the family. It was first owned by Arthur Tatton Houston, who sold it to his brother Gilbert. Gilbert sold it to his sister Dora Belle Houston who married Henry Edward
Eaglestone.
Cloverton - Gilbert Houston bought Cloverton in about 1920 and built the house on the farm. His son Vernon later ran
Cloverton.

He was one of nine children raised on various farms in the former East Griqualand region. His Grandfather was a McMillan from Scotland who may even have belonged to the same clan as former" British Prime Minister, Harold McMillan! His Grandparents apparently changed their name to Houston in 1850 at the time they arrived in S.A. Later in the century most of the family were adding in their real surname. Hence ""Houston"-McMillan"" is the family name in S.A. Alexander married Louisa Maria Maartens from Cedarville and together they had eight children, mostly in the Underberg area of Natal Province. One of the children died in infancy. 1889 - 1971 Gilbert Van Whye Houston McMillan 82 82 ~1890 Frederick Alfred Houston McMillan Frederick Houston owned a trading store at Taylorville, called Protection store Cecilia Jacoba Houston McMillan (Helena) 1894 - 1976 Louisa Maria Maartens 81 81 Born in Cedarville, E.G. in 1894 to Joachim and Cornelia Maartens, a farming family who had migrated into the area from the Eastern Cape. She met Alexander as a teenager around 1910. After their marriage they lived" together on a farm near Underberg where they had most of their children. The youngest (Cloudy Venus) died at the age of seven months. ""Granny"" Louisa was a fun person with many stories to tell from her life in the mountains of Natal and East Griqualand Seven childen of Louisa and Alexander survived to adulthood.

There is a farm called "Annex Martens Pan" 14 Km from Hopetown and adjoins the farm "Maartens Pan".
Hopetown was founded in 1850 when Sir Harry Smith extended the northern frontier of the Cape Colony to the Orange River. A handful of settlers claimed ground where there was a natural ford over the Orange River, and by 1854 a frontier town had developed. Hopetown was named after William Hope, Auditor-General and Secretary of the Cape Colony Government at the time, and is often mistaken for a town in the Freestate, South Africa, called Hoopstad. Hoopstad is a different town and should not be confused with Hopetown in the Northern Cape, South Africa.
Hopetown was a quiet farming area until several large diamonds, most notable the Eureka Diamond and the Star of South Africa, were discovered there between 1867 and 1869.[2][3] The Cape Government Railways were founded in 1872, and the Cape government decided to run the main western line, between the Kimberley diamond fields and Cape Town on the coast, directly through Hopetown. Hendrik Johannes Herbst Maria Katriena Herbst 1853 Willem Higgs 1859 - 1918 Elsje Carolina Liebenberg 58 58 Had 9 children. 1822 - ~1903 James Jacobus Higgs 81 81 Following from Louise F Venter
Hy is oorlede gedurende 1903.
Sy was alom bekend as ouma Ellie.
[Brakfontein is die Higgs familieplaas by Higgs Hope naby Prieska]. Meeste Higgs is ook daar begrawe. James was my pa se oupa aan moederskant.
Getruida Catherina was alom bekend as “Gerty” (my pa se Ouma).
6.      Ellen Carolina Higgs (my pa se ma) is gebore 20 November 1908 – 22 Januarie 1962 en was die derde oudste kind.
Sy was getroud met Abe Maartens (dis hoe almal my Oupa blykbaar geken het – ek het meeste van die inligting by my pa se niggie, Elise Higgs Nel, gekry. Sy is my Ouma Dolly se broerskind).
Volgens my pa se vertellings was sy Pa ‘n rustelose, avontuurlustige mens.
Abe is dood toe my pa maar vier was.
Ellen was haar lewe lank bekend as Dolly.

He inherited the farm Hanover.

This linkage to the parents was not established by virtue of his Estate File but from the association of the family farm, Hanover.

He eventually subdivided Nooitgedacht and sold it keeping a 500 hectare section caled Alam (an anagram of his initials).

A.L.A.Maartens (Oom Laurie) wrote a story, included in the booklet, about an exploit his father had with a bobbejaan in 1894. It starts as follows: “My oorlede vader Joachim Hendrik Maartens, was die oudste seun uit ‘n familie van twaalf kinders, sewe seuns en vyf dogters, waarvan twee dogters ouer as hy was.
