— dr. Jan Visagie, skrywer

Children of Hester Sophia Maartens and Hendrik Jacobus van der Merwe are:

Hendrina Magdalena van der Merwe, b. February 24, 1819, Achter de Sneeuwberg, Graaff-Reinet, South Africa, d. May 27, 1852, Blaauwkrans (Patrysfontein) Victoria, Beaufort, South Africa.
1771 Martha Maria van den Berg Father:      Stephanus van den Burg
Mother:      Louisa Erasmus
1795 - 1877 Hendrik Jacobus van der Merwe 81 81 Voortrekker
Possibly also the source of our HJ VDM Martens
Rietfontein, Uitvlugt, Graaff-Reinet.  Probably moved early in the Great Trek as he was already on the farm Buisfontein, wyk Schoonspruit, Potchefstroom by 1837.( Jan. C Visagie).

Twenty kilometers northwest of Klerksdorp, next to the Hartebeesfonteint-Brakspruit road lies Fort Buis, part of Buisfontein, one of the most historical farms in the North West province. Few motorists recognize this tranquil and untouched gem hidden between the cliffs and ravines as they go past.

This farm,  now abundant in game, was home to the first white man in the North West Province. It is here that the notorious Coenraad de Buys lived while fleeing from the British authorities in 1815. He later traveled further north and settled in the Soutpans mountain range, in the now Limpopo province.

But the historical importance of Fort Buis does not stop with Coenraad de Buys. According to legend the Voortrekker, Hendrik Jacobus van der Merwe, settled himself on the farm Buisfontein in 1837, two weeks after the founding of Klerksdorp. Years later a feud developed over the right of ownership of the farm. In 1855 Van der Merwe had to obtain an affidavit from Jacob de Clercq, who was appointed as magistrate in this area from 1839. (The city of Klerksdorp was named after Jacob de Clerq) It was at this time that H.J van der Merwe sold the farm to his son, also H.J van der Merwe and his son-in-law, P.F Ernst for 8 000 rix-dollar, The families lived on the farm for many more years to come.

The foundations of the house of Coenraad de Buys and the grave of J.J van der Merwe are still part of the neighboring farms around Fort Buis. Several of the original kraal walls built by Coenraad de Buys and his family are still visible on Fort Buis.
nodig is.

My record indicated that only the four children that went to Concentration Camp were hers. But that is belied by the fact that the first 6 children does coincide with their date of marriage.

I suspect that she died before the war as the 4 youngest children (excluding the last, Josef Johannes) were all together on the same farm without parents when they were captured and take to camp (Bloemfontein RC) with the other 55 people found on the farm. Additionally, Gertruida Elizabeth was registered as the head of the family. Speculate that she died in childbirth with Josef Johannes as no further record of him could be located.

Battle of Biddulphsberg: The site of this battle between Boer and British forces in 1900 is situated on the farm Biddulphsberg near Senekal. Two monuments now mark the place where 400 Boers overcame a superior force of 4 000 British soldiers.

Senekal was named after a fallen Boer Commander, Commandant-General Frederik Senekal, who was killed in the Basotho War in 1865. Although established earlier, the town was only acknowledged by the then Orange Free State House of Assembly in 1877. The town is laid out on the banks of the Sand River, a tributary of the Vaal River.

When Elzie died Max remarried to Wilhemina Frederika Van Zyl ( a widow with a daughter Theresa born 1913 and a son Jannie born 1916 – the same year her husband Jan Christian Matthys Van Zyl died).  They had 2 sons together Heinrich and Maximilian Ludwig.
Frieda was schooled in Aliwal North at the convent and later went to university in Pretoria where she met my father in law Johannes Myburg.  They had 4 children. Amanda born 1944, Hannes 1949, Leona 1952 and Andries in 1953

From state archives it proves that Max was interned at the start of the war, released on parole 25 Mar 1915 and reinterred on 11 Jun 1915. Finally released to Delmas on 18 Jul 1919.
