Mapping Reality: A Critical Perspective on Science and Religion
By Willie Maartens
Published: Jun-2006
A critical perspective on science and religion, and specifically on faith (religion and science) and rational thought (science). An endeavour to illustrate (by means of examples) how inadequate human thought and senses are, and how humans never truly can understand reality.
Book Description
We must clearly distinguish between reality (the territory), and what we perceive to be reality (the map of the territory)! In our journey through life, we need something to guide us, to give us reassurance that we are on the right track. Modern science has done its best to take that reassurance away from us, telling us that there is no destination, no purpose, in life, and that in effect our lives are an accident of ‘Nature’. Religion, too, has become equally unhelpful: it has become dogmatic, sectarian, and self-serving. We have lost the core, the real message, of religion, but we still need true spirituality. Indeed, we need a map to the Truth.
“In this amazingly comprehensive and thoroughgoing work, Dr Willie Maartens has produced a remarkable piece of work and I applaud his insights. He has certainly adjusted my own map of reality, or shall I say adjusted my perspective of it! Indeed, the major contribution to learning by Dr Maartens’ book is that it tells us not to confuse our own personal maps of reality with the actual world, or reality, in which we live, move, and have our being. If anything, this book takes off one’s blinkers — or at least makes one seriously think about taking them off and re-adjusting one’s perspectives.”

Story: The South African Police was established in 1913 as a national police force. It had a secondary military role, which came to the fore in World War I and again in World War II.</p> <p>[edit]1923-1963</p> <p>The SAP was eligible for the British King's Police Medal, which was awarded annually throughout the British Empire. This was discontinued in 1933, because South Africa had become independent as a member of the new British Commonwealth, and it was replaced in 1937 by a special South African issue of the medal. From 1923, the SAP also had its own long service medal, which doubled as a medal for gallantry. The medals available to the SAP between 1923 and 1963 were thus:</p> <p>Decoration</p> <p>Queen's Police Medal (South Africa) (1937-61)</p> <p>Campaign medal</p> <p>Africa Service Medal (1943)</p> <p>Long service medal</p> <p>Police Good Service Medal (1923-63)</p> <p>Until 1952, they were incorporated into the British honours system. Thereafter they formed part of the new South African honours system.</p>
POLICE RECORD</strong></span></p> <p>J M Calitz who was born on 13 June 1891 and who attested in the South African Police on 12 June 1915.</p> <p>He received his Police Good Service Medal for 18 years service on 25 September 1933, recorded as Transkei Division. He was a Constable and his service number was 5560(M). The (M) stands for Mounted.</p> <p>His medal is recorded in police Force Order 39 of 1933.</p>
Story: History Of Zastron

<tbody><tr><td valign="top"><p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Zastron used to be the home of many Bushmen who lived in the surrounding sandstone caves. Their legacy lives on in their rock paintings on the surrounding farms. Even after the Bushmen left, the fertile land belonged to no-one and was inhabited by countles antelope, including Springbok, Gnus, Blesbok and Hartebees.</font></p> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Jan Hendrik de Winnaar, a farmer from Aliwal North, set up camp in the Smithfield area and hunted north-east accross the Trans Gariep, stumbling upon the Zastron area. He moved his family and home to the foot of Aasvoëlberg (vulture mountain) in 1838 and was joined by his brother, Reynier Petrus.</font></p> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">In 1840 the renowned Kwena chief, Moshweshwe, paid them a visit. He and the De Winnaars got along well and Moshweshwe decided to "grant" the brothers the land in exchange for a favour. </font></p></td> <td valign="top"><img src="http://www.zastron.co.za/images/ZastronMap.gif" alt="" width="346" height="356"></td> </tr> </tbody> <font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">M</font><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">oshweshwe loved yellow peaches and requested that they plant many yellow peach trees on their fertile land, giving him an annual tribute in the form of fresh, dried, preserved and brandied fruit.</font> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">The De Winnaars shared his love for yellow peaches and happily obliged with his request, planting trees wherever they went, always making sure that they carried a handful of pips in their pockets when taking a walk or a drive with their wagon. For a while the de Winaars' land was known as the "Yellow Peach Republic".</font></p> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">The Caledon river valley found itself in political ferment and the De Winnaars was forced to leave. After their return, feuds between rivel Sotho tribes, Bushmen, white frontiermen, renegades, bandits and settlers ruled the day. In 1855 the cattlerustling, raids and killings drove the De Winnaars from the area once again. Sir George Grey finally came to Smithfield and held a meeting at which a treaty was drawn up to control the area.</font></p> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">The Orange Free State declared war against the Sotho people in 1858 and invaded the Caledon River valley from both the north and the south. Upon reaching Moshweshwe's stronghold in Thaba Bosiu, they soon realised that they were fighting a losing battle and, to their dismay, were forced to retreat.<br> </font><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">After three years of chaos the British stepped in and the land was declared a British protectorate, complete with a new frontier line.</font></p> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">In 1869 Jan Hendrik and Reynier got part of their land back in a general agreement, although it was only "a measly 3 530 ha" of the original grant. Jan named it "Verliesfontein" (Fountain of loss) and farmed the land with prosperous yields until his death on 3 June 1874 at age 77.</font></p> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">The need for a town in the area became urgent, since the nearest school, business and church was situated at Rouxville, over 30km away. Verliesfontein was the chosen site for a town and Zastron became a reality in 1876, named in honour of President Brand's wife, Johanna Sibella Zastrauw, who was born in Poland.</font></p> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Reynier was renowned for his highly embroidered stories and he was always backed by his ever faithful side-kick, a Bushman known as "Vosmerrie". When Reynier's stories became far-fetched and the listeners were starting to doubt its truth, Vosmerrie would make himself heard by simply adding "Dis reg, baas." (that's true, master). It is said that when Pres. Brand visited Zastron, Reynier was to join them for dinner and delight everyone with his tales around the camp fire.<br> </font><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">On 3 Dec 1883, aged 102 (although his true birth date is disputed), Reynier fell ill and passed away peacefully after three days in bed.</font></p> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">In 16 March 1882 Zastron became a municipality and became the warm town on the Lesotho border we know today.</font></p>

ALETTA JOHANNA MAGDALENA VAN DER MERWE
http://www.sagenealogie.com/archives/2008/feb2008.pdf
Groete

Golden Fleece, Matatiele dist.
He died before his wife.
Spelling William Peter Maartens in accordance with his Death Notice. Death notice has informant's signature as W.P. J. Maartens as householder.
History carried over states that he and two brothers moved to Griqualand East (GE) approx 1883. They moved from Maartenshoek near Rhodes. Upon arrival in GE the Trek stayed over in a cave which Chief Sibi (refer to Sibi location near Matatiele), allowed them to stay. Remnants of stone walls inside the cave are still visible. The family burial plot on Golden Fleece is where Willem and his wife are buried. There is a servitude on the farm that allows any Maartens to be buried there.
Further from Barbara Maartens:
1. The Maarten’s brothers moved from the Barkly East district to farm in the Cedarville district in 1887– they farmed on Allington and Collington –graves on this farm and Golden Fleese – graves on this farm.
2. Via Cora van Niekerk:
“My parents farmed at Newlands where they had a farm school and provided accommodation for pupils, my mother had them speaking English and Afrikaans alternate weeks. She also taught them hymns and stories from the Bible. Of the names that I can recall as pupils there were Ann and Tommy Haviside, Elva and Hazel Carroll, several Maartens children from two or more families and also the Holders who were on the adjoining farm.(Three Sisters.) The first teacher of the farm school there was Martie Mulder. Later Mrs Matthie, she also taught in Matatiele 1959/1960. I was born 21/7/28 at Newlands, here my grandparents and parents lived. Later when I was three years of age we moved to Matatiele where I was educated”
“My great grandparents were Willem Pieter Maartens 21/2/1840 - 4/3/1911 and Catharina Aletta (born Janse v Rensburg) 13/7/1843 - 26/10/1926. They farmed in the Cederville district on the farm Golden Fleece where they were buried with a servitude passed on the graveyard area so that at any time a Maartens could be buried there. “

I had his date of birth and death as 24 Oct 1890 and 6 Feb 1963 respectively. But I have another Nicolaas Francois with those dates married to Anna Martha Pelser (Christina). The gravestones of those two are very similar. So I deleted these dates until the problem is solved.

Born in Cedarville, E.G. in 1894 to Joachim and Cornelia Maartens, a farming family who had migrated into the area from the Eastern Cape. She met Alexander as a teenager around 1910. After their marriage they lived" together on a farm near Underberg where they had most of their children. The youngest (Cloudy Venus) died at the age of seven months. ""Granny"" Louisa was a fun person with many stories to tell from her life in the mountains of Natal and East Griqualand Seven childen of Louisa and Alexander survived to adulthood.

Born in Ixopo Natal, S.A. He was one of nine children raised on various farms in the former East Griqualand region. His Grandfather was a McMillan from Scotland who may even have belonged to the same clan as former" British Prime Minister, Harold McMillan! His Grandparents apparently changed their name to Houston in 1850 at the time they arrived in S.A. Later in the century most of the family were adding in their real surname. Hence ""Houston"-McMillan"" is the family name in S.A. Alexander married Louisa Maria Maartens from Cedarville and together they had eight children, mostly in the Underberg area of Natal Province. One of the children died in infancy.

He was a Burger in Graaff-Reinet
Previous records indicated that he died 1852/07/03. I changed this, however as a record from the Orphan Chamber Reference no.: MOOC8/55.3a has him dying intestate leaving all to his widow Susanna Haarhoff. At that point Susanna Elizabeth was 4 years old and Joachim Hendrik 1 year old. This puts his death at after January 1802. The will was concluded 28 January 1802. He had 20 Rd:s in cash plus Rd:s 596.. His belongings were sold for Rd:s 298. He is described as a burgher and a farmer. There is no record of the house and farm. His belongings are listed below:

Bekende skrywer en landbouman sterf
Voorgelê deur Anonymous op Do, 2003-01-23 02:00

From Matatiele
There is a farm called "Annex Martens Pan" 14 Km from Hopetown and adjoins the farm "Maartens Pan".
Hopetown was founded in 1850 when Sir Harry Smith extended the northern frontier of the Cape Colony to the Orange River. A handful of settlers claimed ground where there was a natural ford over the Orange River, and by 1854 a frontier town had developed. Hopetown was named after William Hope, Auditor-General and Secretary of the Cape Colony Government at the time, and is often mistaken for a town in the Freestate, South Africa, called Hoopstad. Hoopstad is a different town and should not be confused with Hopetown in the Northern Cape, South Africa.
Hopetown was a quiet farming area until several large diamonds, most notable the Eureka Diamond and the Star of South Africa, were discovered there between 1867 and 1869.[2][3] The Cape Government Railways were founded in 1872, and the Cape government decided to run the main western line, between the Kimberley diamond fields and Cape Town on the coast, directly through Hopetown. The ford was upgraded to a railway bridge in 1884

The American Saddlebred Horse was first imported into South Africa in 1916 by Claude Orpen, an upwardly-mobile sheep farmer from Barclay East.21 Orpen became known as the father of the ‘high class saddle horse breeders in this country’.22 Following Orpen, Stephanus Phillipus ‘Fanie’ Fouche´ of Constantia, Rouxville, became known as the other ‘father of the Saddle horse’ in South Africa,23 importing his first stallion in 1934.24
http://newlineza.com/breedingweb.htm
tephanus Phillipus Fouche (Fanie) can be seen as the "father" of the American Saddle Horse in South Africa. Practically all the the old champions in the show ring and many of today even stem from horses which he bred. The first horse that he imported was in 1933 - the four year old chestnut stallion Peavine Richard Couer de Lion. In 1943 he imported Proud Bourbon O' Goshen. Many of his off-spring fetched record prices. He imported Edgeview King ( known in the States as Juan Rex/ Edgewood King) in 1947 which sired an large number of great riding horses.

33 miles from Prieska is a place called Higgs' Hope
http://www.orangemsa.com/float-log.php
"Oh! some more interesting news is that they stumbled about a place called Higg's Hope. This is just down river from Douglas and when they got there, they met a farmer who invited them to join them for a braai. When they told him their story he said 'O ja! Ek't van julle manne gehoor!' ANYWAY, the story around Higg's Hope is that old Mr Higgs settled there ages ago and some of the richest diamonds were found on this farm. The farmer who met the boys was this old Mr Higg's grandson."
http://s3.amazonaws.com/zanran_storage/www.northern-cape.gov.za/ContentPages/49734014.pdf
First proclaimed diggings took place on Brakf ontein in 1925; it was called Higgs Hope, after the earlier f amily of Mr J J Higgs, the owner of the f arm. The area had a chequered history of exploration, with as many as 9 000 people living on Higgs Hope during an of ficial census of 1928. The last of the “old timers” lef t in April 1992. Shortly after that, diggers with modern eart h moving equipment moved in, and managed t o break the hard calcrete layer that kept the “old timers” f rom working the underlying diamondif erous gravel. In the mid 1990’s mining rights to Saxendrift/Brakf ont ein were acquired by Northern Cape Diamonds (Pty) Ltd, one of
the later subsidiaries of Gem Diamonds (Pty) Ltd. I n May 2000 t he latter company was merged with Trans Hex Mining Ltd.

Here is the information that I have.
I do not know on which date my grandparents got married, but I have a copy of my mother’s unabridged birth certificate. My grandfather Johan Andries Martins married my grandmother Nora Ann Healey. My mom’s birth certificate states that they were both born in the Orange Free State. I think they had 3 children, 2 daughters and a son.
My mom Moonean Martins was born on the 20th of July 1939, and according to the birth certificate my grandmother Nora Ann was 25 years old and my grandfather Johan was 26 years old when she was born. My father’s name was Francesco John Quai and he was born on the 9th of September 1933. I know that my mother was pregnant with me when they married.
I vaguely remember that we used to call my mom’s sister aunty Felicity and I have managed to find a notice in the Methodist Baptist church of Nigel, Transvaal which states that she was called Felicity Joy Martins. She was born on the 19th of September 1937 and was baptised on the 6th of June 1938. Her dad is listed as John Martins and her mom as Nora Ann Martins.
I am sure that my grandparents had a son and remember hearing a story that my mom’s brother was on a raft that they built with 2 friends and it sank when they were in the middle of a dam and that they all drowned.
My mom and dad got married on the 27th of February 1960 in Nigel and I think that at that stage both my mom’s parents had already passed away.

I saw a photo of her together with Ronny and the president when she visited her son in America, just before she passed away in (2011/12)?
She was a beautiful woman. They lived in Vanderbijlpark for most of their lives.

From Rod
Ellie Caroline MAARTENS married Ernest Godfrey Woest and then “Oupa” Frikkie Greeff. She was my wife’s (Karen Woest, daughter of Cyril) grandmother. She lived iwith her daughter Joyce Eveleen van der Walt (teacher) n and passed away in Elliot, sometime in the late 80’s if I correctly recall.Joyce died in 1999
From Ellie Caroline and Ernest Godfrey’s marriage came Bill (perhaps Willem), Cyril, Johannes Jacobus and then Marie Alberts ((who is alive and living in Randburg. She is the last of the siblings. JJ (John) passed on. His wife is in Auckland with their one daughter, the other daughter and a son are in Cape Town. One offspring not sure of the parentage, Godfrey committed suicide in the 50’s. The eldest son, Gerhard Hendrickus was a farm murder victim in Koppies in 1991. Bill located to Ventersdorp where his wife, Martie still resides (91). Cyril married Margaret Mary Burton - both killed in car accident 2014. They had 4x daughters Karen (1956), Fiona (1957), Ingrid (1966) and Lynne (1968 - 1994 - car accident). My Woests married in Boksburg 1955, went to Rhodesia in mid 60"s via Tzaneen, the Jhb, spent 1971 to 1995 in Hennenman, OFS and 1995 - 2014 in Jhb after Lynne died.

A.L.A.Maartens (Oom Laurie) wrote a story, included in the booklet, about an exploit his father had with a bobbejaan in 1894. It starts as follows: “My oorlede vader Joachim Hendrik Maartens, was die oudste seun uit ‘n familie van twaalf kinders, sewe seuns en vyf dogters, waarvan twee dogters ouer as hy was. Op die ouderdom van sewentien jaar, dit was in die jaar 1894 het hy ‘n groot uitegroeide bobbejaan mannetjie met sy kaal hande gevang.”

According to his DN his mother was Marg.. Maria Maartens.
Names of children confirmed with exception of Izak Jacobus who must have died before his father.
According to his DN he was 85y 23d old at death. If there was a transposition error on the DN that he was actually 58y & 23 d old , it makes more sense. Then his ABW record below substantiates it. Also if DN was correct, he was born before his father. Wife details are correct.

ARTICLES ARTIKELS
Black resistance in the Orange Free State during the Anglo-Boer War
John BojeI; Fransjohan PretoriusII
Josephus du Plessis was killed some time in 1901 on the farm Rietfontein, 15km south-east of Theunissen, by blacks led by Jan Viviers, Stoffel Heinecke and Carl Tempelhof, white members of Bergh's Scouts.91 Leendert Haasbroek was killed on the farm Natal, about 25km north-east of Winburg,in December 1901 and Jan Johannes Maartens at Bloemhoek, near Ventersburg, sometime in 1902.92

At the time of his eldest sister';s death he was at the CID Pietermaritzburg.
Her son in law, Hetasch and his daughter Hester were witnesses at the second marriage.
Louis Russo and his daughter were witnesses at his third marriage.
From his son;
Hy was verbonde en hoof vd Kriminele Buro.
Verder blyk dit oupa IB n innoverende selfgedrewe persoon moes wees.
Possibly died around 1960.

When he married he was a fingerprint expert with the SAP.
Net so ietsie oor oupa ( Izak Benjamin ) Lsg Meen hul was 5 broers (???) Merendeels boere (??? ) waarvan pa ( my naamgenoot ) dikwels van n oom Hendrik ( as een ) gepraat het. Afgetree as hoof vd Vingerafdrukkantoor Kaapstad
Weet hy was later jare weer getroud met n nooi Buckle. Lsg n losieshuis gehad in Tamboerskloof KStad.

Wedding Bells.
Our congratulations to the brothers Danie MAARTENS of Wenfontein, and Hendrik MAARTENS, garage proprietor, on entering the ranks of the Benedicts. The latter's wedding was celebrated at Bloemfontein while the nuptials of Mr. Danie MAARTENS were the occasion of quite a large gathering of friends and well-wishers at the D.R. Church on Monday, the bride being Miss Gwendoline (Gwennie) VAN WYK, of "Envy," a young lady well-known in this district. The bride was charmingly attired, and, attended by her sister, Miss Sophia VAN WYK, ..
